What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a well-established form of natural therapy that originated over 2,500 years ago in China as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a holistic treatment that involves the insertion of ultra-fine, sterile, single-use needles into precise points on the body to stimulate healing, relieve pain, and restore internal balance.

At our acupuncture clinic in Sheffield, we work with patients seeking drug-free, non-invasive treatment for a wide range of physical, emotional, and lifestyle-related conditions. Whether you’re dealing with persistent pain, struggling with stress or sleep, or looking for fertility support, acupuncture is a safe, evidence-informed option that continues to grow in popularity across the UK.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the human body is seen as a network of energy pathways, known as meridians, through which Qi (pronounced “chee”)—your life force energy—flows. When this energy becomes blocked or imbalanced, illness or discomfort may occur. Acupuncture helps by stimulating specific points along these meridians, encouraging the smooth flow of Qi and promoting natural healing.

Modern medical research supports many of acupuncture’s traditional claims. Scientists believe acupuncture works by stimulating nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which boosts circulation, triggers the release of endorphins, and engages the body’s autonomic nervous system. This can result in pain relief, reduced inflammation, improved digestion, better sleep, and enhanced emotional balance.

What to Expect at Your Acupuncture Appointment in our Sheffield Clinic

Consultation: I get to know you

When you book an appointment with me at our Sheffield acupuncture clinic, we start with a preliminary questionnaire, a medical questionnaire and a comprehensive consultation. This includes discussing your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and wellness goals. The aim is to understand the root cause of your condition, not just the surface-level symptoms.

Treatment

Based on this initial consultation, I’ll develop a personalised treatment plan for you. I’ll then invite you to lie comfortably on a treatment couch.

The treatment involves gently inserting ultra-fine, single-use, sterile needles into carefully selected acupuncture points on your body. Most people experience little to no discomfort; at most, you might feel a slight tingling or dull ache that quickly fades – this is very normal.

The needles are typically left in place for 20 to 40 minutes, during which many patients feel deeply relaxed—some even drift off to sleep.

Afterwards

After the session, you may feel calm, refreshed, or mildly tired. It’s also normal to feel a sense of emotional release or lightness following treatment. Whatever your response, it’s advised to leave some time after, or at some point in the day, where you’re able to do what the body needs; maybe sleep, go for a walk, have some quiet time etc. and let the treatment settle in.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. When performed by a qualified and fully insured practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. At our Sheffield clinic, we adhere to strict hygiene protocols, using only sterile, single-use needles and following all UK safety regulations.

You can see my qualifications and accreditations below.

This means you can be confident that you’re receiving a high standard of care, backed by extensive training in both traditional Chinese medicine and contemporary healthcare principles.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are very rare and generally very mild. You may experience a tiny bruise, a drop of blood at the needle site after removal, or a brief sensation of tiredness after treatment. These effects typically resolve quickly and are far outweighed by the overall benefits.
