Cupping

Ancient techniques for modern wellness

At Living in Wellness, we specialise in traditional complementary therapies that support your body’s natural healing ability and promote overall health. One of our highly effective treatments is cupping therapy. Cupping is a time-honoured technique originating from traditional Chinese medicine that uses suction to improve circulation, relieve muscular tension, and enhance wellbeing.

What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy involves placing specialised cups on the skin to create a suction effect that gently lifts the skin and underlying tissues into the cup. Traditionally, cups were made from glass, bamboo, or animal horn. Today, modern practitioners often use glass, plastic or silicone cups for safety and ease of use.

The suction draws blood and fluids to the surface of the skin, encouraging increased circulation and promoting the body’s natural healing processes. The technique may be applied in a static fashion, where cups remain in place for several minutes, or as sliding cupping, where cups are gently moved over oiled skin to provide a massage-like effect.

This suction can cause temporary circular marks, varying from light pink to deep purple, which reflect increased blood flow and the release of stagnation rather than injury.

How is Cupping Therapy Performed?

At Living in Wellness, your practitioner will assess your individual needs and tailor the cupping session accordingly. Typically, the cups are applied to areas of muscular tension or discomfort, such as the back, shoulders, neck, or limbs.

Two main methods of creating suction are used:

  • Fire cupping: A cotton ball is briefly lit and placed inside the glass cup to heat the air, which creates a vacuum as the flame goes out and the cup is quickly applied to the skin.
  • Vacuum cupping: A manual pump or silicone cup is used to create suction without heat, offering a gentler alternative.

The sensation during treatment is usually described as a mild pulling or tightness, which many clients find deeply relaxing and therapeutic. Cups are left in place for around 5 to 10 minutes, after which they are carefully removed.

What Does Cupping Feel Like?

Most clients report a pleasant feeling of warmth and release during and after cupping. The suction stimulates blood flow and eases muscle tension, often producing a soothing effect similar to a massage.

The distinctive round marks left on the skin are a normal and harmless part of the healing process. These marks typically fade within a few days to a week, depending on the individual and the intensity of suction.

After treatment, many people feel a reduction in stiffness, increased range of motion, and an overall sense of wellbeing and calm.

What Does Western Medicine Say About Cupping?

Although cupping is a traditional therapy, Western medical science has explored several mechanisms that may explain its benefits:

  • Increased Blood Circulation: The suction draws blood to the surface, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscles and tissues, supporting healing and reducing stiffness.

  • Myofascial Release: Cupping lifts the skin and fascia (connective tissue), helping to release muscle knots and adhesions that cause pain and restriction.
  • Reduction of Inflammation: Studies suggest cupping can reduce levels of inflammatory markers and stimulate the body’s natural repair mechanisms.
  • Neurological Effects: Suction stimulates sensory nerves, which can modulate pain signals and trigger the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

While research continues, many healthcare practitioners acknowledge cupping as a valuable complementary therapy for pain management and musculoskeletal health.

What to Expect at Your Appointment in our Sheffield Clinic

Consultation: I get to know you

When you book an appointment with me at our Sheffield acupuncture clinic, we start with a preliminary questionnaire, a medical questionnaire and a comprehensive consultation. This includes discussing your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and wellness goals. The aim is to understand the root cause of your condition, not just the surface-level symptoms.

Treatment

Based on this initial consultation, I’ll develop a personalised treatment plan for you.

Afterwards

After the session, you may feel calm, refreshed, or mildly tired. It’s also normal to feel a sense of emotional release or lightness following treatment. Whatever your response, it’s advised to leave some time after, or at some point in the day, where you’re able to do what the body needs; maybe sleep, go for a walk, have some quiet time etc. and let the treatment settle in.
